Lindsey M. Markowitz's Bio

Lindsey is a Ph.D. candidate and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow with a joint appointment at the University of Maryland (UMD) and the United States Department of Agriculture Bee Research Laboratory. She is a microbiologist and disease ecologist with expertise in microbial ecology and host-microbe symbioses.

 

She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Microbiology from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA (now Saint Joseph’s University) where she engaged in numerous research projects and she is currently finishing her Ph.D. in Biology with a concentration in Behavior, Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics at the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park, MD.

 

Her dissertation research investigates the interplay between hosts, beneficial microbes, and parasites while attempting to understand how ecological factors influence these dynamics. She strives to employ multidisciplinary approaches to diverse scientific questions while utilizing past experiences to inform her current research.

Lindsey is a dedicated research mentor to several undergraduates and high school students within the USDA-ARS Bee Research Laboratory, where she guides students as they assist her in her own research and develop their own independent projects. She also enjoys working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant instructing General Microbiology and Microbial Genetics laboratory sections and is currently pursuing her teaching certificate at UMD.

Outside of her professional activities she enjoys reading, bowling, taking care of the UMD campus horses, exploring outdoor spaces in and around the DMV (DC-MD-VA area), and visiting her family and their five dogs in New Jersey.
